Crossroads conducts a weekly Sunday evening Worship service attended by inmates, former inmates, sponsors and volunteers. Many times inmates' families also attend. Attendance averages about 70. A fellowship meal is provided following worship.
The Crossroads population is very dynamic due to the ever-changing population at Community Corrections Center-Omaha. As new inmates enter the Center, they may request permission to attend Crossroads. As inmates are released from the center, some continue to attend Sunday nights.
On a typical evening, the demographic breakdown of the 40 inmates coming from the Community Corrections Center-Omaha to Crossroads would be: 32 men, 8 women; 26 Anglos, 4 Latinos, 10 African-Americans; ages range from early 20s to late 50s. (We do not ask for age, and due to substance abuse it is difficult to estimate ages.)
Crossroads also operates Project LIFE (Living In Freedom Eternally) which helps former inmates assimilate back into society. The long-term goal of Project LIFE is for former inmates to live responsible, crime-free lives and not return to prison.
This is accomplished in several ways. First, Crossroads has transitional housing for former inmates to apply to live in. The goal of the housing is to provide individuals a safe place to live while they begin to rebuild the other elements of their lives. Crossroads rents several apartment and one house as a place for former inmates to live.
Volunteers also work directly with individuals. They take former inmates to doctors' appointments, assist with the Social Security office, job interviews and other things that help former inmates get back on their feet. |
